Fibromyalgia and Gluten A Dangerous Combination. How One Test Changed Three Lives. Dr Richard Hagmeyer. Naperville IL

What do these 3 patients of ours have in common? One is a 70-year old woman who suffered with epilepsy and seizures for 50 years. These came to an abrupt end within on week of stating treatment. The second is a 60-year old woman who could not stop her bone loss from osteoporosis, despite the proper diet, lifting weights, and taking bone-building supplements. Her osteoporosis and continuing bone loss reversed itself within 90 days of starting treatment. The last is a 65-year old who suffered through severe fatigue and what she called "being spacey," confused, and unable to concentrate - for more that 25 years. It all ended within one week of starting treatment.

What these three patients shared in common was that they all suffered from celiac disease and did not know it. Celiac disease occurs when your body cannot tolerate gluten - a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats.
For celiac patients, gluten breaks down the lining of the intestines, interfering with digestion and absorption - leading to multiple nutritional deficiencies. None had the classic symptoms of bloating, nausea, gas, diarrhea, constipation, or weight loss. And none had been tested for or diagnosed with celiac disease.

They all Improved simply because of a Single Test we ran. Part of that protocol was to eliminate all gluten for 30 days. Two were immediately cured, and the third felt so much better that she continued to eliminate gluten from her diet and eventually overcame incurable osteoporosis.

The moral of the story is if you suffer from any illness at all, you must eliminate gluten from your diet for 30 days, simply to test the possibility that this protein is destroying your health. Estimates are that close to 1 in 133 Americans has celiac disease, and most do not know it.

It is tough to diagnose because according to modern medicine, a biopsy of the intestinal lining is the only "true" diagnostic procedure. Of course, this is invasive, and by the time the intestinal lining is being destroyed, celiac disease is far advanced.

It is just so much better, makes so much more sense, and is classic evidence-based medicine to simply eliminate gluten from your diet and see how you feel. If you are remarkably better, biopsy or not, you have hit the nail on the head.

Prescriptions Also
These three patients all suffered from the same - somewhat unusual - underlying cause of their problems. However, for literally thousands of our other patients, we helped them find a much more common underlying cause of their problems by simply examining their prescriptions.
And the lesson here is even simpler: No matter what symptoms you have, always suspect that your prescription drugs are the underlying cause of your problem until proven otherwise.

In fact, no home should be without a drug handbook to look up prescription medications. When you find that your problems are listed as a side effect from a drug that you take, it is an obvious tip off. This is particularly true for cardiac drugs. And if you take more than two drugs, your problem may not be listed under either drug because it could be caused by the combination.

By the time you take two or more drugs, there is not a human being on the planet who can determine just what may be going on in your body as a result of the combinations and interactions. So get to your doctor to take steps to change, wean, or eliminate offending drugs to find your cure. Or even better, if you can find one, get to a private-practice pharmacist who helps people wean off drugs to solve their health problems. Thanks to a glut of super powerful prescription drugs, this is one of the hottest new fields for pharmacists.

So not matter what the symptoms, problems, or "disease" you suffer from, always remember to eliminate gluten as your potential cure - and suspect your prescriptions as the potential cause of your suffering. If you don't, your suffering can go on for years, decades, or your entire life!
Remember….Not everyone who applies is accepted into our program. We have a strict diagnostic screening and case review process that ensures that only those most qualified and most committed to following through with all aspects of our program are admitted. You can find more about our Fibromyalgia Recovery Program Here.

You can rest assured that if you are accepted into our Fibromyalgia Recovery Program, your chances of success are extremely high.

Advanced Fibromyalgia Treatment Center Located In Naperville, IL Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions. Dr Richard Hagmeyer

Advanced Fibromyalgia Treatment Center Located In Naperville, IL

Fibromyalgia is far more neurologically based than muscularly based. It’s just that your muscles feel most of the pain. Most of the Fibromyalgia diagnoses that I see come from Rheumatologists.

A Rhueumatologist, by definition, is a doctor that specializes in disorders of joints and soft tissues- not nerves. Effective Fibromyalgia treatment must include neurologically based care.
At the Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions we implement a comprehensive treatment program that assesses many of the underlying metabolic underpinning to get to the root cause. We use Brain Based Therapy as well as Functional Medicine and Chiropractic. You can learn more about functional medicine and our approach here.
In this article I will bring some evidence to the table that may cause you to question whether Fibromyalgia is more of a joint and soft tissue disorder or, as I and others feel it is, a neurological disorder. And whether the Fibromyalgia treatment you had was appropriate.

The Latest research shows that a Fibromyalgia diagnosis and hence the treatment is far more likely to be of a neurological origin then a rheumatic one. The term rheumatology originates from the Greek word rheuma, meaning “that which flows as a river or stream,” and the suffix -ology, meaning “the study of.” (Which is ironic to me since nerves and blood seem to flow like a river much more than joints).

Most of my Fibromyalgia treatments are with patients who exhibit chronically fatigue. But what actually get tired is your brain. “Nerve Exhaustion” is a phrase that I feel accurately describes what happens in Fibromyalgia, Hence the name Brain Fog.

One of the unique treatment approaches I employ for fibromyalgia patients is the use of oxygen therapy. You can find out what makes The Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions different here.

"In all serious disease states we find a concomitant low oxygen state...low oxygen in the body tissues is a sure indicator for disease... Hypoxia, or lack of oxygen in the tissues, is the fundamental cause for all degenerative disease ." Dr. Stephen Levine , renowned molecular biologist author, Oxygen Deficiency: A concomitant to all degenerative illness.

Listen to what noted Professor of Medicine MAJID ALI, M.D. has to say about the four major symptoms of Fibromyalgia sufferers……

4 Major Symptoms of Fibromyalgia And How Oxygen Helps
  1. Persistent muscle pain and weakness. Explanation: Oxygen deprivation contributes to muscle pain.
  2. Disabling fatigue. Explanation: Oxygen deprivation in tissue can lead to fatigue and exhaustion.
  3. Brain fog (problems of mood, memory, and implementation). Explanation: Oxygen deprivation in brain cells lead to brain fog and dysfunction.
  4. Air hunger. Explanation: Oxygen deprivation within the cells causes a craving for air.
I do not take the treatment or diagnosis of Fibromyalgia lightly and you should steer clear of anyone who thinks otherwise. A recent study uncovered evidence that a Fibromyalgia diagnosis can be far more damaging than you may realize.

In The Journal of Neuroscience, a study revealed that the brain can be prematurely aging in Fibromyalgia patients. No wonder patients with Fibromyalgia feel brain fog! There loosing Brain cells.
What may be more important is that they found that the longer the individual had been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, the more gray matter they had lost. This makes fibromyalgia treatment a must.

“Accumulating evidence now suggests that fibromyalgia may be associated with central nervous system dysfunction.”

The brain matter loss was more than 9 times the normal aging!

Other studies also point to a possible explanation for the decreased gray matter in these disorders. It may be atrophy caused by excitotoxicity or exposure to inflammatory processes (Apkarian et al., 2004). In reviewing the above studies it’s remarkable that in Fibromyalgia patients, gray matter loss occurred predominately in regions of the brain that are most related to stress.

Stress can be managed and I believe it MUST be managed for you to get better. The above research should be all you need to be motivated to initate action.

The road to recovery IS often long and difficult. But there IS a road to recovery. I can assure you it’s bumpy but there IS a road- you just may not have found it yet.

My grandfather once told me,

“No matter how far you’ve gone down the wrong road, turn around… it’s the WRONG road!”

If what the above mentioned studies are saying in terms of brain aging is true, then every moment that you don’t get help counts against you.
The pursuit of health should be paramount in your habits and actions. I know it’s hard, but you have Fibromyalgia, so you’ve proven you can do hard. Fibromyalgia pain is hard.
With the addition of oxygen therapy to Our Fibromyalgia Syndrome treatment protocols rate of tissue healing only increases.

Oxygen Therapy For Fibromyalgia Patients WOW. What a Difference!. Dr Richard Hagmeyer, Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions.

Dramatic Breakthrough In Fibromyaglia and Chronic Fatigue Treatment offered at The Naperville Insitute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions Naperville, IL
Your brain uses about 20% of all the oxygen that enters your blood from the lungs. But the brain only makes up about 2% of your total body mass.

It’s an oxygen hog.Your brain consumes and requires more oxygen than any other organ in the body. So, inherently, it’s extremely susceptible to damage related to oxygen deprivation.

I see a lot of patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FM). One of the most important modalities that I employ is oxygen therapy.

It can be extremely effective.

In fact, oxygen therapy for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is one of the “keys” I use in managing those conditions naturally. Fibromyalgia has so many neurological components to it. The nervous system needs oxygen to function. Ignore that fact and you get sub-par results.

To make a complex concept simple, your brain and nervous system need two things to survive:

FUEL and ACTIVATION.

The most important forms of fuel come in the form of oxygen and glucose. You get glucose from the foods that you eat, but as we age our ability to utilize oxygen decreases. It’s called oxidative phosphorylation (scientific talk for ‘your body doesn’t utilize oxygen as effectively as it should anymore.’)

Oxygen is to the body what gas is to your car. Without gas in the car you’re not driving anywhere.

Without sufficient amounts of oxygen available for your brain and nervous system, not only can you age prematurely but many of the various treatments you attempt may not get you much better.

Oxygen Therapy                                                   Oxygen is fuel for your brain and nervous system. Your brain and nervous system need two things to survive…Fuel and activation (stimulation), Fuel comes in the form of OXYGEN and GLUCOSE. By using supplemental oxygen, you will be able to heal faster.

Exercise With Oxygen Therapy (EWOT)
By using exercise with oxygen therapy, we can increase the firing to the brain. This increased firing of the brain, can help patients recover from MANY chronic conditions, including Fibromyalgia.

Your brain and nervous system need two things to survive: fuel and activation. Fuel comes in the form of glucose and oxygen. You get the glucose from the food you eat BUT as you age, your ability to utilize oxygen decreases. We use oxygen to help people heal faster. It is our goal to get our patients better as fast as possible.

What does Oxygen do for the body?
• Oxygen retards the aging of human cells
• Oxygen helps relieve headaches
• Oxygen relives tiredness and fatigue
• Oxygen boosts the immune system
• Oxygen supports breathing in air in cases of asthma and allergies
• Oxygen helps in cases of depression
• Oxygen improves physical performance by up to 25%

Natural Fibromyalgia Treatment. Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions Naperville, IL, Dr Richard Hagmeyer

Dear Friend,

Hi! My name is Dr. Richard Hagmeyer and I am a chiropractic physician unlike any you’ve ever met. Before I tell you WHY let me share some reassuring life changing information with you.

Hundreds of people in our community have suffered like for 10,20,30,40 years maybe like you and found real long-term relief from Fibromyalgia pain, Brain FogHorrible Fatigue, Insomnia, IBS using my Fibromyalgia Recovery Program. Some have even recovered completely from their fibromyalgia…and you could be next.

Fibromyalgia Recovery Is Possible with Functional Medicine and Brain Based Strengthening Therapy.

But not with the conventional methods of treatment that you have probably tried over the years. You may be tempted to click and leave thinking you’ve heard it all. Please stay with me for a few minutes and continue reading. Don’t you owe yourself a few minutes to learn about my amazing program?  You can feel good again! Its not hopeless even though sometimes it feels that way.

Listen to Sherols testimonial below.

I know you’ve probably spent countless hours of your life visiting so called ‘Fibro Specialists’ and reading some of the silly claims about a miracle supplement you need to take only to have your hopes dashed again by another hollow promise. That’s is because every other doctor, therapist, medication or healer is only attempting to ”cover up” your symptoms.

Managing your symptoms, not fixing the underlying causes. That’s just ridiculous and I’m tired of hearing that same sad story. They don’t have the specialized training, the most advanced scientific understanding of functional neurology, functional metabolic testing/analysis/treatment and functional medicine currently known. I do. They haven’t applied the right set of individualize treatments based on objective advanced testing. Because if they did, you won’t be searching for answers.

My practice implements something called functional medicine and you can learn more about it here at www.DrHagmeyer.com

I don’t treat a condition, I treat the person. And, the results are remarkable. Most people don’t believe that people can recover from fibromyalgia. Why?

#1 They’ve been told so by every doctor, book or group they’ve ever seen that nothing more is possible. That you need to just accept it and deal with it. well that may have been true 10 or 15 years ago but its NOT true anymore. People from all over the country come to the Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions for a good reason. We get results.

#2 They’ve lived with the pain for so long that even the thought of recovery seems impossible to them. So why not at least try and find a magic pill or potion that will make symptoms tolerable? You don’t have to anymore.

Is Fibromyalgia Something You Have to Live With Forever.

For some it is! But if you are reading this....... then Fibromyalgia doesn’t have to be a one way street of taking stronger and stronger medications in order to cover up the ever increasing pain and the ever increasing number of symptoms.

How many more sleepless nights will you have to endure?

How much longer are you willing to live in constant pain while you slowly give up on enjoying your social life, hobbies, work, and family?

How bad does it need to get?

If you could get to the source of the problem, discover the underlying mechanisms, correct the metabolic and neurolgical imbalances giving the body a chance to heal naturally, you just might have a fighting chance to overcome this devestating disease.

What gives me the right to speak so boldly? Over the last 10 years, I have been working with some of the top physicians around the country in the area of metabolic and brain/nerve Therapy. By completing post-graduate studies in functional neurology, blood work analysis, endocrinology and neurotransmitter health, I have discovered and perfected treatment protocols that have created a revolution in fibromyalgia care.

This is not a cover-up treatment.

Has anybody told you what nerves need to get and stay healthy? How do you repair damaged nerves? How to get to the source of the pain and inflammation and make it stop! I am part of a select group of doctors across the country that are helping fibromyalgia sufferers using these cutting edge methods. Thousands of people have found fibromyalgia recovery possible. Will you be next?
  • Are you tired of running from doctor to doctor only to play “Russian Roulette” with different medications? “Here try this drug, that didn’t work? Try this one!” It seems like they are coming out with a new fibromyalgia medication every month only to see it fail! Bet you’ve already tried them all.
  • Are you tired of taking drugs and trying therapies that don’t fix the problem?
  • Do you continue to struggle with constant pain and chronic fatigue day in and day out?

If you’re tired of dealing with this problem and you are worried about it getting worse, order my free ground breaking report to learn how your fibromyalgia can be helped.  If you are skeptical... There is nothing wrong with that. But dont let your skepticism get in the way of somethign that could change your life forever. Should you live in the chicagoland area, you can call us at 630-718-0555 for a FREE phone consultation. We will be more than happy to share with you how our approach to Fibromyalgia, What makes us different. and how we get results. Your only a phone call away!

Thyroid Worries ? Lupus Diagnosis....... Fibromyalgia Are You Confused?. Dr Hagmeyer Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions.

Thyroid, Lupus & Fibromyalgia

Very often Thyroid problems can be found in those that also have been diagnosed with lupus or fibromyalgia. Lupus, fibromyalgia and thyroid problems share similar symptoms, and all are difficult to diagnosis from each other. To make matters worse, symptoms might change on a daily basis, and symptoms for all three illnesses can vary with patients. There does seem to be a connection with those getting diagnosed with one of these illnesses and having two of them, or lupus, fibromyalgia and thyroid problems.

The thyroid is an endocrine gland in the front of the throat. It makes necessary hormones T3 and T4 that regulate metabolism. Even slightly higher (hyperthyroidism) or lower (hypothyroidism) amounts of these hormones can cause significant health problems. Symptoms can include weight gain, depression, anxiety, fatigue, Brain Fog and insomnia, to name a few.

Thyroid problems are diagnosed with a blood test for the thyroid hormone levels of T3 and T4. However, sometimes an individual can have borderline levels of these hormones and still have symptoms.

Dr. Hagmeyer uses functional ranges in blood tests using concepts in functional medicine. Our functional ranges are more "tight" than traditional average blood lab ranges that you see reported on your test results. We input your blood test result into a special Blood Nutrition software program.

Using a functional ranges is one of the "secrets" to why Dr. Hagmeyer can unravel the mystery of the patient's illness, that other doctors have not had success with. Another secret is using the methods developed by Dr. Datis Kharrazian to find out if you have one or more of the 24 patterns of thyroid malfunction.

learn more about our Natural Thryoid Program  at www.napervillethyroiddoctor.com

Fibromyalgia is one of the most difficult of the illnesses to diagnose. Often a doctor will simply eliminate other diagnosis’ such as thyroid or lupus and by process of elimination end up with Fibromyaliga. There is a limited test where pain near 12 joints in the body is tested. Symptoms of fibromyalgia include mainly fatigue and joint and muscle pain. However, a number of other varying symptoms can be found in Fibromylagia patients. Fibromyalgia and Thyroid problems may easily be connected and hard to tell apart from one another when you have borderline thyroid hormone levels.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks tissues in various parts of the body. Internal organs such as the lungs and kidneys can be attacked. The linings of the organs can be attacked causing a host of overall pain in the body. The symptoms can vary greatly but mainly include skin rashes, photosensitivity, mouth ulcers, chest pain or problems breathing, neurological problems or blood disorders, as well as fever, fatigue and hair loss. Some of these symptoms are very close to those with fibromyalgia and thyroid problems. Diagnosis of lupus is done by testing for high levels of antinuclear antibodies, ESR and antids-DNA leveles. As with the thyroid hormone level tests, borderline levels of antinuclear antibodies may still cause health problems.

There has been studies that indicate those with lupus may be more likely to develop thyroid problems. Since thyroid illness can also be an autoimmune disease, this connection makes perfect sense. Today fibromyalgia has only a limited test as nothing physiologically can be found connecting all patients with the disease. But, because of the common symptoms, one suffering from thyroid illness or lupus might also have fibromyalgia even if a doctor can not diagnose it.

Fatigue, pain and symptoms that can occur in all three illnesses connect lupus, fibromyalgia and thyroid illnesses. Not all doctors might see the connection and instead only treat one or two of these diseases, then wonder why a patient is still experiencing problems. The connection between the illnesses is something that Dr. Hagmeyer and other like-minded doctors are looking into. With the advent of specialized testing developed by Dr. Aristo Vjodani, which are available at The Naperville Institute For Neuro Metabolic Solutions, we are finding a possible link.

One of the most important concepts that set Dr. Richard Hagmeyer apart from other traditionally trained doctors is our philosophy "treat the patient, not the diagnosis" approach to patient care.

Neuro-Metabolic Therapy is a multi-pronged diagnostic and treatment approach whose goal is to balance body Hormones, Vitamin Deficiencies, eliminate Gut infections, address Immune System imbalances, eliminate inflammation, reduce imbalances in brain function and mitigate the effects of stressors on the body.

In short, we “dig deep” to find out the underlying cause to your chronic condition nightmare.

Health Tips For Naperville IL and Plainfield IL Fibromyalgia Sufferers

Fibromyalgia Treatment Success Secret #2:

An autoimmune condition is where your immune system is attacking a part of your body, and in your case, it is most likely attacking multiple systems in your body including your thyroid gland, adrenal gland, nerves, joints and muscles.  This is why you suffer with constant pain, chronic fatigue, Insomnia, digestive stress, Thyroid symptoms, vitamin deficiencies, Headaches and the list coud go on......

Let’s start with your thyroid, because it controls ALL OF your body’s metabolism, and the #1 cause of low thyroid in the U.S. is a condition known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis (aka. autoimmune thyroid).  Your immune system is attacking and killing your thyroid. You don’t have just a “thyroid” problem; you have an “immune” problem!

Unfortunately, if you are a patient who is suffering with Fibromyaliga or CFS, thyroid hormones do nothing for this autoimmune attack.  You will continue to lose more and more of your thyroid by taking the medications.  It is a slow, progressive, downward slide and maybe you can relate...you started out with one drug then a second then a third then a fourth then a fith. (thats called a downward slide!)

So the problem isn't just your thyroid if you are fatigued, or your adrenal glands if you are not sleeping, or your joints, nerves and muscles if you are in pain or suffering with numbness, tingling and burning: it is your immune system and many other systems.  You have an immune system problem, and you need to heal your immune system.  The problem is…medicine has no clue on how to heal your immune system!

There are two parts to your immune system, TH1 and TH2, and they should be in balance, kind of like a teeter-totter effect.  One should not be higher than the other.  If your immune system goes out of balance because of stress (physical, chemical or emotional), one system (TH1 or TH2) will become dominant and this will cause your immune system to attack your body.  There are specific blood tests that can be run to determine if you are autoimmune and if one part of your immune system is dominant.

Now, the problem with an autoimmune condition is that it doesn't attack just one area of your body--it can attack multiple areas of your body.  It can attack your thyroid, causing extreme fatigue; your pancreas, causing diabetes; your nerves causing numbness, pain, tingling or burning…it can attack your gut (Leaky Gut Syndrome), your stomach lining, (causing IBS), or it can attack your joints (rheumatoid arthritis).

It can attack your entire body!

You need to be tested to see if you are having an autoimmune condition, to determine if that is what is causing your CHRONIC PAIN, CFS AND FIBROMYALGIA.  You need to find the root cause of your condition.  The only way to know is to run and properly interpret the tests!

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Self-Treat Your Thyroid or Fibromyalgia Condition Dr Richard Hagmeyer

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Self-Treat Your Thyroid or Fibromyalgia Condition

Dr Richard Hagmeyer
www.DrHagmeyer.com

I got a call from a woman this afternoon and my heart simply broke for her. She was diagnosed with a Thyroid condition as well as fibromyalgia many years ago. Like most people suffering from these disease processes, She went from doctor to doctor only to be put one  medication to the next. She was on 3 antidepressants, metformin, cholesterol lowering medications, allergy medications for all of her food sensitivities, prilosec and Lyrica for the chronic pain. This is shear insanity! No doctor in their right mind has a clue as to what all of these medications are doing to her body.

Many people suffering with Fibromyalgia or thyroid conditions don’t want to cover up their symptoms with medication. This is great, as they realize there is an underlying cause to their problem, and they want to treating their condition naturally. But they have no idea where to turn.

Of course some people do need to take thyroid medication on a permanent basis, but I’m not referring to these people. In any case, many people who want to restore their health naturally think they can do so on their own. As a result, they gather as much information as they can through reading books and surfing the internet, and then put together their own treatment protocol.

Sometimes people will see positive changes in their symptoms when self-treating their condition. On the other hand, many people won’t see much of a difference.

Either way, most people who attempt to self-treat their condition aren’t able to successfully restore their health back to normal. So I decided to dedicate this post to those people who are looking to take a natural approach, but are thinking about self-treating their condition.

What I’m going to do here is list five reasons why you shouldn’t self-treat your thyroid condition. This is true whether you have primary hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, or an autoimmune thyroid condition such as Graves’ Disease or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

Reason #1: There are risks when self-treating your condition. Even when using natural supplements and herbs, there are always risks involved. Most people don’t have a strong knowledge of these supplements and herbs, and many assume that because they are natural there is no risk involved. While the risk might be minimal, it still exists. Plus, just abruptly stopping your thyroid medication and replacing them with nutritional supplements and herbs makes it even more risky.

Reason #2: You can’t trust everything you read. Once again, many people come up with a natural protocol based on what they read in a book, or on the internet. Heck, some people try to piece the information I provide on this website to develop their own natural treatment protocol. Of course different people will need different supplements and herbs, and will also require different dosages. As a result, it’s extremely difficult to come up with a treatment plan which will work based on the information you read on this website, or anywhere else. And much of the information on “natural cures” put out there are by people who don’t have much experience with this. Most aren’t even healthcare professionals. This doesn’t mean there aren’t people who are very knowledgeable about natural treatment methods. You just need to be extremely careful about any information you read in books, and especially on the internet.

Reason #3: The body is extremely complex. Although it would be great if one could restore their thyroid health simply by eating well and taking some random supplements and herbs, it’s almost always not this easy. The body is way too complex to restore its health just by taking supplements and herbs, eating well, etc. Obviously eating well and taking supplements and/or herbs is very important to restore one’s health back to normal. But doing this alone won’t cure your condition. If you’re looking to completely restore your health back to normal, just remember that the body is very complex, and because of this it is highly unlikely you will receive optimal results by self-treating your condition.

Reason #4: It probably will cost you more money in the long run. Many people choose to self-treat their condition because they figure they will save money taking this approach. After all, they won’t need to pay a doctor for an initial or follow-up consultation, will be able to price-shop for any supplements or herbs they buy, etc. However, after they realize they aren’t going to receive optimal results they will frequently end up consulting with a holistic doctor anyway. So while you might save money initially, in the end it almost always will cost you more money when self-treating your condition.

Reason #5: You most likely won’t receive optimal results. This obviously relates to the previous four reasons I spoke about, as for all of the reasons I have mentioned, it is unlikely you will receive optimal results by treating yourself naturally. I do get some emails and comments from people stating they self-treated their condition and felt much better after doing this. And as I’ve mentioned, some people will feel better when self-treating their condition. On the other hand, many people don’t feel much of a difference at all. But even those people who do feel better when self-treating their condition most likely won’t fully restore their thyroid health back to normal. In summary, while it might seem easy enough to self-treat your condition, the truth is that for the reasons I mentioned above, most people don’t receive optimal results when taking this approach.

Functional Medicine.Naperville Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions. Dr. Richard Hagmeyer

It's a science-based, natural way to regain health and prevent disease.

Functional Medicine is patient-centered medical healing at its best. Instead of looking at and treating health problems as isolated diseases, it treats individuals who may have bodily symptoms, imbalances and dysfunctions.

As the following graphic of an iceberg shows, a named disease such as diabetes, cancer, or fibromyalgia might be visible above the surface, but according to Functional Medicine, the cause lies in the altered physiology below the surface. Almost always, the cause of the disease and its symptoms is an underlying dysfunction and/or an imbalance of bodily systems.

If health care treats just the tip of the iceberg, it rarely leads to long-term relief and vibrancy. Identifying and treating the underlying root cause or causes, as Functional Medicine does, has a much better chance to successfully resolve a patient's health challenge.

Using scientific principles, advanced diagnostic testing and treatments other than drugs or surgery, Functional Medicine restores balance in the body's primary physiological processes. The goal: the patient's lifelong optimal health.

How Functional Medicine Heals a Key Health Care Gap

Today's health care system is in trouble because it applies a medical management model that works well for acute health problems to chronic health problems, where it is much less successful.

If you have a heart attack, accident or sudden lung infection such as pneumonia, you certainly want a quick-thinking doctor to use all the quick-acting resources of modern medicine, such as life-saving technology, surgery and antibiotics. We are all grateful about such interventions.

However, jumping in with drugs, surgery and other acute care treatments too often does not succeed in helping those with chronic, debilitating ailments, such as Diabetes, Thyroid Problems, Fibromyalgia heart disease or arthritis. Another approach is needed.

The Two-Pronged Healing Approach of Functional Medicine For FM And CFS

To battle chronic health conditions, Functional Medicine uses two scientifically grounded principles:
  1. Add what's lacking in the body to nudge its physiology back to a state of optimal functioning.
  2. Remove anything that impedes the body from moving toward this optimal state of physiology.

Plainly put, your body naturally wants to be healthy. But things needed by the body to function at its best might be missing, or something might be standing in the way of its best functioning. Functional Medicine first identifies the factors responsible for the malfunctioning. Then it deals with those factors in a way appropriate to the patient's particular situation.

Very often Functional Medicine practitioners use advanced laboratory testing to identify the root cause or causes of the patient's health problem. Old-fashioned medical diagnosis helps too, in the form of listening carefully to the patient's history of symptoms and asking questions about his or her activities and lifestyle.

For treatment, Functional Medicine practitioners use a combination of natural agents (supplements, herbs, nutraceuticals and homeopathics), nutritional and lifestyle changes, spiritual/emotional counseling, if necessary to prod a patient's physiology back to an optimal state. In addition, educating the patient about their condition empowers them to take charge of their own health, ultimately leading to greater success in treatment.

Treating Symptoms Versus Treating the Person

A diagnosis is a label and labels are best reserved for cans not people! In the dominant health care model today, medication is used to get rid of people's symptoms. If the patient stops taking the medication, symptoms generally return.

Functional Medicine approaches health problems differently. Instead of masking the problem, it aims at restoring the body's natural functioning.

For example, conventional doctors would normally prescribe pharmaceuticals like Prilosec, Prevacid or Aciphex to treat acid reflux or heartburn. When the patient stops taking such drugs, the heartburn symptoms come back. In contrast, a Functional Medicine practitioner might find that a patient's acid reflux is caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Eradicating the Helicobacter pylori might very well lead to the end of heartburn symptoms, permanently.

It's also important to note that in Functional Medicine, treatment for similar symptoms might vary tremendously for different patients, according to their medical history and results of laboratory tests. Factors that can come into play in producing the same symptoms include toxic chemicals, pathogenic bacteria, parasites, chronic viral pathogens, emotional poisons like anger, greed or envy, and structural factors such as tumors or cysts.

Is Fibromyalgia an AutoImmune Disease. Dr Hagmeyer From Naperville,IL Institute For NeuroMetabolic Solutions

How do you know if you're autoimmune?  How do you know if your immune system is attacking your body?
The reality is…most people already know that they're autoimmune just from the fact that they may already suffer from a current autoimmune disorder such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Sjogren's syndrome, scleroderma, and/or lupus.

Another way that people will know if they're autoimmune is that their symptoms may wax and wane.  Symptoms that wax and wane are a sure sign that you are most likely suffering from an autoimmune condition.

The third way to know if a patient's autoimmune is that they are often takig a basket full of supplements--I mean a truck-load.  I've had people bring in so many bottles of supplements it wasn't funny.  In many cases, the supplements that they are taking were actually making them worse!

Number four…their life fell apart after they got sick.  Often for women they can tie it back to the time they began having a menstrual cycle, during pregnancy or during perimenopuase. Also, many women can tie it back to a viral infection they had years ago.

That's how they know they're autoimmune.  They've been to 12 or 15 or 20 different doctors and they have a stack of medical records sky-high, all because it's an undiagnosed autoimmune condition.

They may develop an autoimmune condition following a pregnancy.  Usually, women are TH2 dominant in the third trimester and TH1 dominant postpartum.

And finally, there's positive testing via specific immune panels.  Your immune system is designed to protect you.  When your immune system runs amuck, it starts attacking different parts of your body. Once you realize you have an autoimmune condition, it's important to know that you need to get checked, and you need to manage that autoimmune condition. We can help do that!
